For Moms about Money

I would love to buy only organic foods and be as eco-conscious as possible, but shopping at the Whole Foods alone gets expensive. Making eco-conscious decisions while staying on a budget is my biggest problem - I would love to hear your solutions to that!

I have one great example from our recent move. We didn't buy cardboard boxes, bubble wrap nor paper to pack our things. We bought sturdy plastic containers with lids, and packed all our dishes and breakables to our sheets and towels. After moving a family of five - we didn't have any trash, our dishes didn't break and we can re-use the plastic containers in the next move. They are all neatly packed in storage now. If you don't want to save them after the move, just list them on Craig's list for sale.

The biggest way we buy organic and healthy foods on a budget is by buying locally when possible, either via CSA (community supported agriculture) or even just at the farmer's market.

We also get veggies delivered weekly from a local organic farm, sort of a way to buy in bulk, and we pay way less than even the non-organic foods at the regular grocery store.

You can go to http://www.localharvest.org/ to find local farms. They are good for your body, the environment and your wallet!

When we just recently moved, we called a local store and made arrangements to come get their boxes once they were done ith their shipment each night. Also, grocery stores have apple boxes that I heard are great for packing too and they are happy to give them up.

When lived in California there was a new grocery store called Fresh and Easy and they carried organic food at really great prices, sometimes less that non-organic produce found at the other grocery stores. I think they are only on the West Coast though.
